Yes, this is yet another post-apocalyptic look at the world, and in many ways not so different in it's themes than the ones that come before it. The one real difference is that the entire movie is one constant chase scene, with lots of things getting blown up and exploding, amidst humans trying to do daring feats of valor.
So, yes, being female in this society is exactly what you would expect it to be. They are breeders to be owned and controlled. Only in this one it is the women who make a break for it, and so you are rooting for them to get some freedom rather than just seeing them as sex objects (although that element is clearly still there).
It was a diversionary movie within the parameters described above, and certainly the men in the house liked it more than I, but I would call it just a solid action adventure movie.
